PORT ALBERNI, BC, CANADA

H A P P Y   B I R T H D A Y    A M E R I C A

We are now in Port Alberni, located in the heart of Vancouver’s awe inspiring Pacific Rim region. Our first stop was to see MacMillan Provincial Park’s Trees of Cathedral Grove. This walk is in the last accessible forest of giant trees remaining in BC. Walking along these trails is to walk backward in time; to experience the primal forest and to wonder at nature’s marvels. We saw Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar and the Western Hemlock. It was a very enjoyable stroll that we took on the trails. The sun was shining and the weather was quite comfortable. The road there reminded us of traveling on the Avenue of the Giants that traverse the Redwoods in Northern California.

On Saturday we stopped at the home base of the Mars Water Bombers, where we saw two of these massive planes that were originally built as long-range patrol bombers for WWII. More recently their thrilling fire-fighting missions have become world-famous. They are used quite frequently in fighting fires as they can drop enough water, foam, or gel to cover three or four acres at a time. We saw one on land and one in the water and they are huge ! They can make drops every 15 minutes, and scoop up 7,200 gallons of water on the run in 30 seconds. Three miles of water are required for these pickups.

On our way back to the trailer we saw two deer trying to cross the river, while a bald eagle was watching them.

As you can see we passed a very popular farm that proves that Canadians are more liberal than Americans.
